Kenneth Florey, Professor of English

When I first came to Southern, I was a medievalist, specializing in Anglo-Saxon literature and the History of the English Language, with a little Chaucer on the side. Over the years my academic areas have developed and changed, although I still regularly teach the language course. My main interests now, however, are mythology (Greek, Norse, and Celtic) and African-American literature. With respect to the latter, I have developed an introductory course in major African-American authors as well as upper division and graduate sections of the Harlem Renaissance and the Contemporary African-American novel.

Although I have always respected the intelligence, drive, and enthusiasm of Southern’s students, I have come to rely increasingly on their diversity of backgrounds and their eagerness to contribute to class discussion. In short, I like teaching here.

Interests—Politics, ephemera, genealogy, hiking, poker, antiques, travel, movies, and good food.
