A wise man isn’t he who has lived the longest, but he who has travelled the most (Kyrgyz saying).

The Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic gained its independence from the collapsed Soviet Union on 31 August 1991 and became the Kyrgyz Republic.  Commonly known as Kyrgyzstan, it was led by the first non-communist Central Asian leader, Askar Akaev. Mr. Akaev is a physicist, who was head of the Academy of Sciences. On 24 March 2005, Mr. Akaev escaped to Moscow as the country reacted to the parliamentary elections with distaste. The elections were corrupted and led to his overthrow. Presidential elections took place on 10 July 2005.  Only time will tell the if true change will take place.
