More of Karakol

Karakol’s geographic isolation is more than compensated by its natural beauty. Land formations lend themselves to many legends.  The above, Razbitoye Serdtse (broken heart) tells about a princess whose heart broke in half... its all about love...

Students from the local university do not hesitate when given the opportunity to visit their surroundings.  However, many of those to the left admitted that they had not previously visited Razbitoye Serdtse during the winter.

Nearby is yet another landform with a story to share.  It is about the Jeti-Oghuz (seven bulls), and yes, it is another tragic ending love story.  These red sandstone hills tell and hide much... about the Karakol valley.

The road to these landforms leads to the Jeit-Oghuz canyon housing a well known Soviet era spa, built in 1932.  Hot springs, picnic areas dot the canyon.  In 1991, Russian President Boris Yeltsin met President Akaev here.

A park commemorates past Soviet wars and heros.

Even those who gave their lives during the Soviet presence in Afghanistan are remembered.

Ties with Russia continue...

However, U.S. Peace Corps volunteers play an important role in contributing to the Karakol community. Recently arrived Matthew will spend two years here.

Students wishing to learn English regularly visit the American resource center.  Lacking of adecuate materials many of these students speak English quite well, even though most have not travel far from Karakol.
