Other Highlights

Overlooking Ulaan Baatar is a memorial monument to World War II.

Within the memorial there are a series of paintings commemorating the role that Mongols played in the war, as well as the long friendship between the Soviets and the Mongolian people.  No mention is made of other times when the Soviets were less than gentle with Mongolians.

Victory over Nazi Germany

Soviet influence ended with its collapse.  Since then major changes have taken place in Mongolia, particularty economic. A Market economy was adopted resulting in many of the changes that are recognizable to Europeans and North Americans.  Shopping malls have been build and super markets introduced. Products from all over the world are now available.

The state store (above left) represents an example of a local business that offers goods and services along the western model. The export business, too, is strong (photo right). The lower left photo shows the range of goods available to Mongolians. Foreign currency can be changed virtually everywhere, including in a super market. Notice the presence of English as a language in addition to the use of the Mongol language which uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

However, poverty still remains and quality of life has not improved for all.
