Research Reassigned Time:
School of Communication, Information and Library Science

I have a special, if not unique, situation in my school,
which comprises four departments -- Communication, Computer Science,
Information and Library Science and Journalism.

Each faculty member in CSC gets 1.5 credits per semester for research
reassigned time (they each also get 1.5 credits per semester for advisement)
pursuant to an agreement with ABET, the organization that offers
professional accreditation to CSC programs. This started with the last ABET
visit, maybe 3 years ago. Weirdly, since they only teach 9 credits, ABET
allows CSC faculty to do 3 preps, while when they taught 12 credits, ABET
restricted them to 2 preps.

Each faculty member in ILS gets 3 credits per semester for research
reassigned time pursuant to an agreement with the ALA, the organization that
offers professional accreditation to MLS programs. This arrangement has
existed since time immemorial.

Because of the large fixed reassigned time overhead in SCILS, we never had
much discretionary access to research reassigned time. Before the CSC
blanket arrangement, we did get 4 credits per semester and I used this in
fractional slices to buy services useful to the dean from faculty, but
rarely for scholarship. Please let me know if you need any more information.
