Undergraduate Curriculum Forum (UCF)

Minutes 4/2/98

Present: B. Horn, G. Puerschner, J. Ullian, P. Cascella, L. Lancor, J. Tait, B. Workman, D. M. Hamilton-Lee, M. Macomber, C. Davis, P. Beals, F. Harris, L. Yacher, K. Swenson, J. Kavanagh, B. Wein, D. Chevan, B. Madara, M. Tackett, T. Bynum, J. Hauselt, P. Gallup, J. Rakfeldt, J. Granfield, S. Jensen, C. McDaniels, N. DeCrosta, L. Kohrn

I.    Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by S. Jensen at 9:40 am.

II.    Announcements:

  • J. Kavanagh distributed a memo (4/2/98) from the Math department which outlines changes in the math all university requirements.
  • M. Macomber announced that the English department voted to make English 101 a prerequisite to L courses.

III.    Approval of Meeting Minutes: The minutes of the previous UCF meeting (3/12/98) were approved with no revisions.

The following were distributed prior to today's meeting:

  • Flow of Proposals, Version 11
  • Flow of Proposals, Course Revisions, A Summary
  • Minutes from NMC, 3/3/98 and 3/17/98
  • Minutes from UWIC, 3/19/98
  • Minutes from NPIC, 3/5/98
  • Checklist for Presentation to the NPIC of UCF, 3/30/98

IV.    UCF Flow of Proposals (Version 11): S. Jensen introduced this topic and there was no discussion of version 11. Jos Ullian was commended for his role in developing the flow of proposals.

V.    Committee Reports:

  1. Notifications Management: (See reports, 3/3/98; 3/17/98). P. Gallup (chair) introduced the minutes from NMC, dated 3/3/98. There was no discussion of this report.   2. University Wide Impact: (See report, 3/19/98). P. Beals (chair) reviewed the minutes from the University Wide Impact meeting. It was noted that JRN 101 was rejected by this committee and that an appeal is expected from the Journalism department. Discussion followed and it was decided that S. Jensen would forward the criteria for all-university requirements to UCF members. Discussion occurred with regard to voting rights of non-faculty who participate in this committee. The minutes were unanimously accepted.
  3. New Programs and Innovations: (See report, 3/5/98). B. Wein introduced this report and noted the resolution outlined after paragraph two. S. Jensen reported that no direct response has been received by the academic vice president regarding minors. Discussion occurred about the standardization of forms used by NMC, UWIC and NPIC. This committee was asked to come to the UCF meeting 4/30/98 with a description of "program". UCF members approved the form submitted by NPIC titled "Checklist for Presentation......".
  4. Program Review & Assessment: There was no report from this committee. S. Jensen reported that he has asked L. Kohrn and N. DeCrosta to work on the topic of hidden requirements.

VI.    Election of UCF Chair:

  • Motion 1: A motion was made, seconded and unanimously approved:

        C. Serchuk shall be UCF chair

  • It was requested that each committee elect a new chair prior to the next UCF meeting.
  • After discussion, the following motion was made:

         Motion 2: A motion was made, seconded and unanimously approved:

         The Rules committee shall consider the topic of a vice-chair

  • Discussion occurred about measuring the effectiveness of UCF operations and procedures. It was noted that there is currently no review process in place and that consideration may be given sometime next year after the school curriculum committees are in place.

VII.    Adjournment:

  1. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded and passed unanimously.
  2. The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 am.
