Undergraduate Curriculum Forum (UCF)

Minutes 12/4/97

I.    Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Bob Gelbach at 9:40 am.

II.    Announcements:

  • The presentation by B. Gelbach and the Program Review and Assessment committee was deferred until the first meeting of the Spring semester.
  • Members of the UCF expressed their good health wishes to DonnaJean Fredeen.

III.    Approval of Meeting Minutes: The minutes of the previous UCF meeting (11/13/97) were unanimously approved.

IV.    Chair's Report: The chair's report was deferred.

V.    Committee Reports:

  • Notifications Management: (See report). P. Gallup (chair) requested that UCF members discard the meeting minutes (11/11/97). A revised set of minutes will be made available at the next UCF meeting.
  • University Wide Impact: (See report). P. Beals (chair) introduced the report.

Motion 1: a motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously

move to accept the minutes of the UWIC

  • New Programs and Innovations: (See report). There was no discussion of this report.

VI.    Flow of Proposals: J. Ullian reported that the flow of proposals has been revised (version 10). This revision will be discussed at the next UCF meeting. Also, a discussion of the role of the Deans and all University requirements was deferred to the next UCF meeting.

Discussion occurred regarding the procedure for the logging in of proposals in the absence of the UCF chair.

VII.    Implicit and Hidden Prerequisites: Discussion occurred regarding:

  • course requirements that are not obvious to students on the CPR sheet.
  • high school versus college level course content 
  • administration of placement exams early in a student's college career
  • previously passed UCIC motions regarding placement exams and registration 
  • activities of the University Quality Improvement committee
  • math knowledge necessary for University Requirement courses in math (see handout distributed by J. Kavanagh)

Motion 2: a motion (with amendments) was made, seconded and passed unanimously

move to stop discussion and have the chair invite people from the Quality Improvement committee to UCF and then continue discussion

move to have L. Kohrn submit sample CPR's that included prerequisite courses

move to obtain previously passed UCIC motions regarding placement exams

move that the UCF chair will distribute the sample CPR's and the UCIC motions to UCF members

move to include discussion of a student's placement in college level courses after a review of their high school record

move to invite a representative from academic affairs to the discussion on placement exams, CPR sheets and course prerequisites

Discussion occurred regarding advisement, the number of credits in a student's major and electives. The discussion was tabled until the next UCF meeting.

VIII.    Adjournment:

  1. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded and passed unanimously.
  2. The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 am.
