Undergraduate Curriculum Forum (UCF)

Minutes 2/4/99

I.    Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by C. Serchuk at 9:35 am.

II.    Announcements:

  • A UCF Web page is under construction. Members were encouraged to contact P. Brandes with suggestions.
  • It was announced that the Steering Committee will be meeting with the School Curriculum Committees later in the semester.
  • It was announced that three student members are needed for the campus writing board.
  • It was announced that the Notifications Management Committee completed its review of the BS in Communication. Additional members are needed for this committee.
  • It was announced that a conference about writing is scheduled for Friday, 2/5/99 at Gateway.
  • The Music Department is sponsoring a Mardi Gras party on 2/16/99, 8pm, in EN 115.
     

III.    Approval of Meeting Minutes: The minutes of the previous UCF meeting (12/3/98) were approved with no revisions. Paperwork for today's meeting included:

  1. NMC minutes 12/10/98; 12/15/98
  2. UWIC Minutes 12/10/98; 1/28/99

IV.    Committee Reports:

Notifications Management: (see minutes 12/10/98; 12/15/98). P. Gallup (chair) introduced these minutes, and one minor correction was noted. The minutes were accepted.

University Wide Impact: (see minutes 12/10/98; 1/28/99). P. Beals highlighted these minutes and commented that the general education review is likely to take a long time. It was reported that this committee is reviewing how best to proceed in their actions. The minutes were accepted.

New Programs and Innovations: M. Spence reported that this committee is discussing interdisciplinary minors.

Program Review & Assessment: There was no report from this committee.

V.    Steering Committee: C. Serchuk introduced a motion from the Steering Committee which passed unanimously:

Motion 1: to allow three levels of Special Topics Courses (i.e., 298, 398, 498)

VI.    Remediation: C. Serchuk introduced a follow-up discussion about remediation and presentations occurred by Ross Gingrich (Math) and SueEllen Holbrook (English). Ross Gingrich highlighted summary statistics about the Math placement exam (1994-1997). Discussion occurred about the availability and content of remedial math classes and the content of 100+ level Math classes. Discussion also occurred about students who place into both remedial Math and English and their preparedness for other 100 level courses.

SueEllen Holbrook outlined the contents of the early English classes (098, 100, 101), and provided samples of a student's work from English 098. In addition, the grading criteria for the English placement exam was reviewed.

VII.    Adjournment:

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded and passed unanimously.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 am.
