Undergraduate Curriculum Forum (UCF)

Minutes 11/19/98

I.    Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by C. Serchuk at 9:35 am.

II.    Announcements:

  • Members were reminded that there will be a guest lecture by Professor Bednarczyk on 11/19/98 12:30.
  • The date for the final Fall, 1998 UCF meeting is 12/3/98. The date of the first Spring, 1999 UCF meeting is 2/4/99.
  • It was announced that Pam Brandes will be developing a UCF webpage.

 
III. Approval of Meeting Minutes: The minutes of the previous UCF meeting (11/5/98) were approved with no revisions. Paperwork for today's meeting included:

  1. UWIC minutes, dated 11/12/98
  2. NPIC Position on Special Topics Courses, dated 11/19/98; Undergraduate special topics courses, Spring, 1999

 IV. Committee Reports:

Notifications Management: P. Gallup reported that this committee continues to review the BA/BS program in Communication.

University Wide Impact: (see minutes, 11/12/98). P. Beals (chair) highlighted topics from these minutes. The minutes were accepted.

New Programs and Innovations: P. Brandes (co-chair) reported that this committee is working on a position document for minors.

Program Review & Assessment: There was no report from this committee.


V. Direction and Goals of UCF: C. Serchuk introduced discussion about the topics generated at the previous UCF meeting (11/5/98 minutes, item VI). Discussion occurred about prioritization of these topics, and referral to the following committees:

 
Interdisciplinary practice: NMC;

Human diversity courses: entire UCF;

General education requirements: UWIC;

Faculty retraining budget: not discussed, not assigned;

Relationships between departments: UWIC;

The shaping of a curriculum: not discussed, not assigned;

Remediation resources: entire UCF; C. Serchuk will send an e-mail reminding UCF members to forward comments about remediation to her prior to the next UCF meeting.

L course levels: refer to the campus writing board;

Student representation in decision making for courses: entire UCF;

Course Discounts: not discussed, not assigned;

On-line classes: NPIC;

Variable-length courses: not discussed, not assigned.

 
VI. Special Topics Shell Courses: P. Brandes (co-chair NPIC) introduced the NPIC position paper and the list of Spring, 1999 special topics courses. Discussion occurred about the approval and monitoring of special topics, as well as the numbering of courses.

Motion 1: A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously

to accept the position paper of NPIC and thank the committee for its

effort.

 
VII. Adjournment:

  • A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded and passed unanimously.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 am.
