Minutes 11/9/00

I.    Call to Order:  The meeting was called to order by J. Tait at 9:35 am.

II.   Announcements:

  • There will be a bus trip to the Metropolitan Museum on 11/17/00, sponsored by the Art department.
  • There will be a presentation about the presidential election on 11/10/00.
  • The faculty development committee is seeking additional faculty members to become involved in its activities.  Interested faculty should contact Ellen Beatty.
  • The general education subcommittee of UWIC is seeking faculty feedback regarding the general education requirements.
     

III.  Approval of Meeting Minutes:

The minutes of the previous UCF meeting (10/26/00) were approved.  Paperwork today included:

  • UWIC minutes, 11/2/00
  • NMC minutes, 11/2/00
  • NPIC Report on Proposal for a Major in Anthropology (not dated)
  •  PRA minutes, 10/12/00

IV.  Anthropology Proposal:

Representatives from the anthropology department (M. Selvaggio, J. Manzella, C. Musiba, K. Skoczen) discussed the history of the proposed anthropology major and components of the program.  Discussion followed regarding the CPR form, the relationship of physical anthropology to biology classes, admission standards, foreign language requirements and field experience requirements for the BA versus BS degree, overlap with earth science classes, and the availability of the UCF assessment committee as the program develops.

   Motion I: A motion was made, seconded, and unanimously approved:

   Move that the anthropology program proposal be accepted.

 

V.   Committee Reports:

Steering:  J. Tait and M. Heidmann reported that the steering committee is discussing re-certification of existing L courses in Arts and Sciences

Notifications Management:   (see report, 11/2/00). J. Bloch (Chair) highlighted this committee's approved minutes.  The minutes were accepted.

University Wide Impact: (see minutes, 11/2/00).  F. Harris highlighted this committee's approved minutes.  Discussion followed regarding CPR form modifications.  The minutes were accepted.   

New Programs and Innovations:  (see NPIC Report on Proposal for a Major in Anthropology, not dated).  There was no additional report from this committee.

Program Review & Assessment: (see minutes, 10/12/00). C. Coron (Chair) highlighted this committee's approved minutes. This committee will meet 11/30/00.  The minutes were accepted.

VI.  On-line Courses: J. Tait introduced the topic of whether UCF should examine whether on-line courses present as a significant revision to a course's curriculum.   Discussion followed about philosophical issues, and the degree to which on-line courses are comparable to other  classes with regard to content, objectives, course description, and assignments.  Instructors from on-line classes will be invited to present about their teaching experience.  

VII.  Adjournment:

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made, seconded and passed unanimously.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 am.
