It was pointed out that students and advisors need to be informed that although certain developmental courses (ENG 098 and MAT 095, for example) are non-credit bearing courses, students do get load credits for these courses. Therefore, students should not feel they have to take extra courses in order to satisfy load requirements for full-time status and/or financial aid. The chair of UCF will send a note to the faculty right before registration.

Writing Across the Curriculum (WACC)

WACC minutes of 12/09/04 received.

Motion that the following courses be accepted as "L" courses:

V. Variable Credits for internships and independent study

The chair raised the issue of allowing all departments the option of variable credits for internships and independent studies. The issue arose over the break on two occasions. The first occasion involved a department wishing to enroll a student in a 6-credit internship when the department's internship was UCF-approved and Banner-designated as 3 credits. The second occasion involved a department wishing to enroll a student in a 6-credit independent study when the department's independent study was UCF-approved and Banner-designated as 3 credits. As an attempt to avoid this problem in future registration periods, the chair proposed the idea of granting all departments the option of allowing variable credits for all internships and independent studies.

A number of members expressed concern regarding the UCF's role in departmental decisions. They did not think it was up to us to declare departmental policy. It was suggested that, perhaps, we should inform departments of the option, but leave it up to them to make proposals. It was suggested that representatives bring this issue back to departments for consideration by their departments.

There was also discussion surrounding the differences between independent studies and internships. Some members wanted them to be discussed separately, due to their differences.

VI. Standards for proposals - discussion regarding the delegation of parts of work to subcommittees

The chair asked the body to consider the work we need to do, and asked that we delegate this work, in ways that make sense, to subcommittees for initial consideration.

In an attempt to organize this information, members came up with the following list, and after discussion, decided the subcommittees listed below should take up these issues.

Deadlines - (no subcommittee designated)

Assessment -- PRAC

Formatting issues - UWIC

Credit Issue - (no subcommittee designated)

Cross-listing -NMC

Academic Integrity - (decided that the School Curriculum Committee deals with this)

Reusable course numbers (no subcommittee designated)

It was suggested that we need to communicate with the School Curriculum Committees in order to better understand many of the issues listed above.

Meeting adjourned at 10:47 a.m.
