I. The meeting was called to order at 9:40 am.
II. Announcements
• K. Marsland announced the United Way Days of Caring. Book drops are available around campus for Read to Grow and New Haven Reads.
• E. West announced a problem with the SCSU website in which outdated portions of the Geography Department website can still be accessed through searching the SCSU site. K. Marsland pointed out that it is possible to eliminate this outdated information by consulting with Betsy Beacom.
• D. Pettigrew announced that as part of Southern Reads there will be a panel discussion on Oct. 27th and a film screening on the 29th on Out of Africa. The next panel will be on Nov 3rd.
• N. Henderson mentioned that the FYE office has 5 free books for incoming freshman as part of the Southern Reads program.
• D. Pettigrew announced the Cinema du Monde for Oct. 3rd is This is Spinal Tap hosted by Charlie Dellinger-Pate.
• T. Lin requested that we invite Southern students to attend the Girls' Conference on the weekend of Oct. 17th. They are trying to provide funding to underwrite their admission. N. Henderson announced that FYE will assist first-year students interested in attending the conference.

V. New Business
f. UCF Chairperson's Report
• D. Weiss asked the body to read the report. She outlined the steering committee's goals:
1. To hear presentation by GETF today
2. Oct. 9 - Q&A and discussion of GETF proposal
3. Oct. 23 - to hear differing presentations
4. Nov. 6 - to hear GETF revised proposal
5. To vote on proposal without further changes (pending approval of UCF body) at 11/6 or subsequent meeting when discussion is completed
6. Proposal to move to Senate for faculty referendum or return to GETF to work on new model
• Motion: The Steering committee moves to discuss the topic of the proposed Liberal Education Program at Southern Connecticut State University.
• All approved with no abstentions.
g. Liberal Education Program presentation - Dr. James Tait, co-chair, General Education Task Force
• Several possible discussion topics were brought up during the presentation. A full discussion of the Liberal Education Program will occur at the next meeting.
o How many of our students will need ENG 110 or other developmental math courses? How will this change the Liberal Education yearly plans?
o What are the available resources from the Provost?
