Notifications Management Committee Minutes
December 7, 2000
Present: Jon Bloch (chair), Lisa Rebeschi, Kathy Mauro, Peggy Gallup, Joe Fields, Nance Disbrow, Dan Soneson, B. Achhpal, Bonnie Farley-Lucas, George Puerschner
Recorder: J. Fields
Proposals:
Psychology: PSY 383 revisions (including a change in the course number from 483 to 383 and the deletion of a BIO 100 prerequisite) were discussed. Programmatic changes, in the general psychology major and in the Mental Health concentration were also considered.
Outcome: G. Puerschner made motion to accept the revisions. They were approved unanimously
Communication: COM 385 - a new course proposal entitled "Documentary Production" was considered. L. Rebeschi noted that some of the learning objectives were not phrased in terms of assessable student outcomes.
Outcome: G. Puerschner made motion to accept COM 385 proposal pending rewording of the learning objectives. Unanimously approved.
Exercise Science: Revisions to 2 courses, EXS 288 "Orthopedic Assessment of the Lumbar Spine and Lower Extremity" and EXS 289 "Orthopedic Assessment of the Cervical Spine and Upper Extremity" were discussed. A typo in the course title on the EXS 289 proposal form was noted.
Outcome: Motion to approve these revisions, after minor corrections, was unanimously approved.
Political Science: A new course proposal, PSC 335 "Global Politics" was reviewed
Outcome: The proposal was referred back to its authors for clarification of several issues.
Subcommittees:
1. Guidelines for course numbering - We discussed revisions made to J. Bloch's draft document made by N. Disbrow and J. Fields. Several relatively minor changes were suggested.
Outcome: We voted unanimously to recommend this document to the UCF pending these revisions.
2. Revision of UCF forms - J. Bloch presented checklists for general course proposals and for specific types of proposals. Discussion centered around minor typographic errors with one exception: the exact nature of prerequisites must be made precise to ensure that they will be properly implemented in BANNER. G. Puerschner suggested that fully-parenthesized Boolean expressions - for example SOC 100 and (ANT 101 or HIS 101) - were the only the way to make prerequisites completely unambiguous. In particular, commas must be avoided in lists of prerequisites because their meaning (and vs. or) could be misinterpreted.
Outcome: Nancy Disbrow moved that we approve these documents and recommend them to the UCF pending these revisions. This motion was passed unanimously.
Meeting adjourned at 10:50am
