Meeting 5/9/02 Minutes

Present: Jon P. Bloch (chair), Kathy Mauro, Vince Breslin, Beena Achhpal, Joe Fields
Recorder: Jon P. Bloch

1. The following proposals were passed unanimously:

  • SOC 216 (Men's Studies). New course.
  • SOC 351 (Sociology of Religion). New course.
  • SOC 302 (Social Organizations). Minor revision to title (from "Complex Organizations") and to catalog description, to reflect the greater breadth now given the course.
  • ITC 370 (Media Production). Minor revision to catalog description to use updated terminologies.
  • CHE 120-121 (General Chemistry I, II). Minor rev to prerequisites: 121 to be required for 120.
  • CHE 290 (Chemistry Research). New course.
  • CHE 342 (Environmental Chemistry Laboratory). Minor revision to prerequisites: CHE 340 added to 240 and 261.

2. The following proposals were passed unanimously, pending revisions:

  • BS Library-Information Service: Clarification needed on CPRs, "Summary of Proposal," and in the main body of the proposal as to the exact number of requirements/electives in the program; also couple of minor typos.
  • BS Business Administration, Business Economics: Upon a visit from Professor Judith Mills of Economics, the NMC approved unanimously a version of proposed program changes that differed from the one received from the Business SCC; Dr. Mills had a signed memo from the Chair of the Business SCC that verified that her version was correct. Revised copies of the proposal are needed; Dr. Mills stated she would get them to the Chair of the NMC. The program revision discussed was changing lines 34 and 36 of the CPR form to read: "A selection of related courses at the 300 level or above with the approval of the advisor".

3. The following proposals were returned to the Chair of the Business SCC, with the understanding that if the needed revisions could be made in time, the NMC would vote to approve these proposals via e-mail before the UCF meeting on 5/16/02:

  • BS Business Administration, Finance
  • BS Business Administration, MIS
  • BS Business Administration, International Business
  • BS Business Administration, Management
  • BS Business Administration, Marketing
  • BS Business Administration, Accounting
  • BA Economics

In our brief perusal of these proposals, inconsistencies were discovered between the information on the proposal form and the attached revised CPRs. Also, the Computer Science Department would be affected by many of the proposed changes, and needs to be notified. The rationales for the changes often could use brief elaboration, to address all the changes being proposed. The signature sheets lacked mention of a contact person(s), which, given the visit from Dr. Mills, added to our desire to seek clarification before approving these proposals.

4. Other Business

We very briefly discussed improving communications with SCCSs next year and the creation of materials that included (for example) samples of course and program proposals that required no further editing by the NMC.
