MINUTES OF THE NOTIFICATIONS MANAGEMENT SUB-COMMITTEE MEETING
12/19/02

(amended)

Present: J. Bloch (Chair), B. Achhpal, V. Breslin, K. Burke, R. Cretella, J. Fields, R. Glinka, N. Disbrow, W. O'Brien

  • ENG 100 (Composition) and ENG 101 (Composition II)

Guest speakers from the English Department Ilene Crawford (contact person) and Vara Neverow (ENG Chair) spoke and addressed questions about the proposed increase in credit hours from 3 to 4. By a vote of 4-2-2, the NMC voted not to accept this proposed change. From both the standpoint of instructors' delivery and actual student contact hours, these proposals in their current state were deemed not specific enough. The NMC informed Dr. Crawford that she may appeal this decision to the UCF main body, or resubmit the proposals to the NMC with more explicit information as to how the 4 credit hours would be handled, whereby all students would be delivered 4 hours per week. (As per the directive of the UCF Steering Committee, the NMC limited its discussion of these proposals to this one aspect.)

  • ANT/WMS 430L (Global Women's Issues)

Guest Speaker Joseph Manzella (ANT Chair) spoke about this proposal, stating that his department felt that it had undergone enough revisions, though the Arts and Sciences SCC was requesting further changes. Review of the proposal in various states led the NMC to conclude by a vote of 7-0-1 that essentially the changes proposed by the SCC already had been followed, whereby the proposal should rightfully be returned to the SCC. The NMC felt it was important that only in extremely rare circumstances should the SCC be bypassed, and that this situation did not constitute such an instance. As a courtesy to ANT, the proposal will not have to be returned to the NMC for further review, but will be signed off on once the SCC has approved it.

  • MDS 350 (Hip Hop, Rap and Signifying)

Guest speaker Roger Conway (MDS Chair) informed us that he was withdrawing this proposal and that it may be worked on further in conjunction with the Music Department. No action was taken.

  • SOC 200 (Adventures in Sociology)

No action taken. The NMC felt that the lab element of the proposal needed to be made more explicit (in the same vein as the discussion on ENG 100 and ENG 101).

***

For the first time in quite awhile, the NMC was not able to attend to new proposals received. These will be dealt with at the start of the spring semester:

MDS 370 (Music and Sound in Media)

SOC 363 (Social Inequalities in the U. S.)

SOC 380 (Foundations of Sociological Theory)

SOC 480 (Applied Sociological Theory)
