Course Proposals
MDS 333: Media Research.
Karen and Wes reported that Media Studies DCC discussed the question raised by NMC regarding
the absence of prerequisites for MDS 333. The Media Studies Department indicated that the
information generated by NMC discussions had been very useful in structuring courses currently
being prepared for proposal and that these course proposals had clearly benefited. While
Media Studies DCC took NMC's questions very seriously, they decided that for this particular course a prerequisite was not appropriate. In the opinion of Media Studies DCC, the 300 designation reflects the rigorous nature of this research intensive course, and a 200 designation would
indicate a course less demanding. At the same time, there would not seem to be a course(s) that should necessarily be required of students before embarking on this one.
Motion to approve: Rose Cretella, Second Kathy Mauro.
Approved unanimously
PSC 353: Congress and Public Policy.
Jon Bloch suggested that the words "or higher "in the course prerequisite sophomore or higher status were unnecessary.
Motion to approve: Rose Cretella, Second Lynn Kohrn

HIS 341: Islamic Fundamentalism.
The timeliness of this course was discussed briefly.

It was suggested that because the following course proposals contain only prefix changes from COM to MDS, and are otherwise essentially
unchanged, that they be voted on collectively.
MDS 245: Introduction to Mass Media
MDS 280: Media Issues and Problems
MDS 442: Media Criticism
MDS 482: Seminar in Contemporary Mass Media
Motion to approve: Kathy Mauro, Second Rose Cretella
Approved unanimously
Other Business
In reference to the ongoing committee discussion about the structure of course proposal learning objectives vs. learning outcomes, Jon Bloch shared some assessment models currently being discussed by the UCF Steering Committee and PRAC, as per a recent meeting with Vice-Presidents Beatty and Smith.
Questions regarding UCF proceedings were discussed. Jon Bloch indicated that he would bring these topics up with the steering committee, and also encouraged NMC members to feel free to discuss these matters on their own.
