Minutes of 2/5/04

 

Present 

K. Burke,  N. Disbrow, J. Fields,  R. Glinka,  C. S. Kim, G. Kowalczyk,  J. Manzella, K. Mauro, M. Vancour.

 

I. Proposals

Proposal(s) reviewed at this meeting: A program revision from the COM department.  This proposal included 4 major changes:

  1. Change of program title to (Specialization in) "Organizational     Communication."
  2. Revise requirements for the specialization (including increasing the credits required in the specialization from 12 to 18.
  3. Revise electives in the specialization (two new courses).
  4. Revisions to 6 existing courses.


The committee decided to first review the course proposals then vote on the program revision.


Revision of  COM 250 "Business and Professional Communication" involved a title change and a new catalog description.  K. Mauro moved for acceptance, G. Kowalczyk seconded.  The motion passed 7-0-0.


Revision of COM 322 "Communication Training and Development" involved title and catalog description changes as well as three additional prerequisites.  N. Disbrow moved for acceptance, G. Kowalczyk seconded. The motion passed 7-0-0.


Revision of COM 430 "Communication Strategies in the Corporation" involved title and catalog description changes as well as strengthening the prerequisites.  G. Kowalczyk moved for acceptance.  N. Disbrow seconded.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


The revision of  COM 440 "Cultural Influences in Communication" involved only the addition of a prerequisite (there had been none, now it is COM 225).  K. Burke moved for acceptance, G. Kowalczyk seconded.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


The revision of COM 490 "Practicum in Organizational Communication" involved a title change and the removal of "Departmental permission" from the prerequisite.  K. Burke moved for acceptance, N. Disbrow seconded.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


The revision of COM 494S "Practicum in Intercultural Communication" involved a title change and changes to the catalog description.  K. Burke moved for acceptance, M. Vancour seconded.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


COM 275 is a new course proposal entitled "Persuasion."   After some discussion the committee asked for a letter of support from the Media Studies program.  K. Burke volunteered to request such a letter at the next MDS Curriculum Committee meeting.


COM 487 is a proposal for a new course entitled "Advanced Organizational Communication Theory."   K. Burke moved for approval, G Kowalczyk seconded.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


Finally, regarding the proposed revisions to the Specialization in Organizational Communication, K. Burke made a motion to approve the program revision subject to the final approval of COM 275.  That motion was seconded by G. Kowalczyk.  The motion was approved 6-0-1.

 

II. Motions

Persuant to the above, the NMC brings the following motions to the UCF:

  1. "The course revisions to COM 250, 322, 430, 440, 490 and 494S be approved."
  2. "The new course proposal for COM 487 be approved."

 

III.     Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
