Minutes of 3/4/04

 

Present 

K. Burke,  B. Butera,  J. Fields,  R. Glinka,  C. S. Kim, G. Kowalczyk,  K. Mauro, M. Vancour.


I.    Proposals

Proposals for review today included PCH 430,  PCH B.S. (spec. in Health Promotion and spec. in Environmental Health), NUR B.S. Nursing, PCH 431, PCH 432, PCH B.S. (spec. in Health Promotion), EXS 184, EXS 185, EXS Athletic Training Education Program, EXS Human Performance Program, ART 270 and MDS 430. 

PCH 430 "Health Promotion Priorities" was a course revision involving a change to the catalog description.  K. Burke moved for approval subject to the correction of 2 typographical errors. Greg Kowalczyk seconded. The motion carried 7-0-0.


The second item considered was a revision to the B.S. in Public Health (both programs) involving a  change in the "academic standards" statement.  Currently students have an unlimited number of  attempts to achieve a C or better in their PCH courses.  The new language would limit them to two attempts (excluding withdrawals) to achieve a C.  K. Mauro moved for approval, K. Burke seconded, the motion passed 7-0-0.


The B.S. in Nursing was a program revision eliminating PHY 103 and CHE 125 from the program for RN's who are completing their B.S. degrees.  The proposal states that "New Nursing courses, relevant to their practice will be developed to replace the credits."  Notification letters from the chairs of Chemistry and Physics were attached.  G. Kowalczyk  moved for approval, Becky Butera seconded, the motion carried 7-0-0.


PCH 431 "Health Promotion Interventions" was a course revision proposal that involved strengthening the prerequisites (adding PCH 202) and doubling the contact hours and credits from 3 to 6.  K. Burke made a motion to approve the revisions, which was seconded by C.S. Kim.  The motion was passed 7-0-0.


PCH 432 "Health Promotion Planning and Evaluation" was a course revision proposal changing the prerequisites by eliminating the phrase "or concurrent" from the PCH 431 prerequisite.  K. Burke moved for approval, G. Kowalczyk seconded, the motion carried 7-0-0.


The next item being reviewed was a program revision for the B.S. in Public Health specialization in Health Promotion.  The proposal was to delete PCH 433 from the specialization.  (The credits would be replaced by the expansion of PCH 431.)  K. Mauro moved for approval with Greg Kowalczyk seconding.  The motion was passed 7-0-0.

 
EXS 184 "Introduction to Athletic Injury Care and Prevention" was a new course proposal.  K. Burke moved for its acceptance, K. Mauro seconded and the course was approved 7-0-0.

 
EXS 185 "Concepts and Practices of Athletic Training" was a course revision.  The revision involved adding the new course EXS 184 as a prerequisite.  K. Mauro made a motion to approve which was seconded by M. Vancour.  The vote was 7-0-0 in favor.

 
The EXS Athletic Training Education Program was considered next. The proposal was to delete SHE 203 and EXS 191, and add EXS 184, PSY 228 and PSY 321 to the program. Further changes were to make PCH 201 "Wellness" the only option under AUR #5 and to make PSY 100 "Introduction to Psychology" the only option under AUR #15.  K. Burke made a motion to approve which was seconded by M. Vancour.  The motion carried 7-0-0.


The EXS Human Performance Program was also a programmatic change.  The proposal was to delete EXS 387 and EXS 486 from the program and add EXS 184.  K. Mauro made a motion to approve.  G. Kowalczyk seconded. The motion carried 7-0-0.

 
ART 270 was a course revision.  The proposal was to increase the prerequisites from "none" to "Any 1 of the following courses: ART 112, 113 or 150."   B. Butera moved for approval.  M. Vancour seconded the motion.  The motion was passed 7-0-0.


MDS 430 "Gender, Media, Culture" was a new course proposal.  C.S. Kim made a motion to approve the proposal subject to the correction of a typo.  The motion was seconded by M. Vancour.  The vote was 7-0-0 in favor.

 

II.    Motions

Persuant to the above, the NMC brings the following motions to the UCF:

  1. "That the new courses EXS 184 and MDS 430 be approved."
  2. "That the course revision proposals for PCH 430, PCH 431, PCH 432, EXS 185 and ART 270 be approved."
  3. "That the UCF approve program revisions to:

 

  • Public Health B.S. (specializations in Health Promotion as well as Environmental Health)
  • Nursing B.S. (for candidates with the RN)
  • Public Health B.S. specialization in Health Promotion.
  • Exercise Science Athletic Training Education Program.
  • Exercise Science Human Performance Program.
