Notification Management Committee Minutes

Thursday, April 13, 2006

Present:  Jane Feng, Roy Hunter, Mary Kiarie, Lynn Kohrn, Tricia Lin (co-chair), Michele Vancour (co-chair/recorder)

NMC received 12 proposals for review at today's meeting.  However, there were only six members present at a time, and it was felt that a quorum was needed to vote on any potential motions.

In order to make the UCF deadline for course approvals, it was decided that we would review and vote on the proposals via email.  Hardcopies of the proposals were sent to members through interoffice mail, if they did not receive them on April 13th.  Email responses were received from Jane Feng, Deb Flynn, Rich Glinka, Roy Hunter, Richard Kustin, Tricia Lin, Troy Rondinone, and Michele Vancour.

HON 275 - Science and Writing, a new course proposal.  This course will be offered as an elective in the program.  Students must obtain permission from the Honors College Director.
Motion: Deb Flynn, Second: Tricia Lin (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PCH 340 - Public Health Research, a revision to remove MAT 107 from the prerequisites.  MAT 107 remains a requirement in the public health major and is a prerequisite to a lower level course requirement (PCH 242).
Motion: Deb Flynn, Second: Tricia Lin (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 303 - The History of Islamic Thought, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly, and consistent with Banner.  Women's Studies notified.  An error in the newly proposed prerequisites was identified and modified by the contact, Dr. R. Volkman.  It reads, "3 credits in philosophy/religious studies or junior/senior status." Junior/senior status replaces "6 credits in relevant major/minor."
Motion: Tricia Lin, Second: Deb Flynn (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 309 - Women and Religion: The Old and New Eve, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly, and consistent with Banner.  Women's Studies notified.
Motion: Roy Hunter, Second: Tricia Lin (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 310 - Women and Philosophy, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly, and consistent with Banner.  Women's Studies notified.
Motion: Tricia Lin, Second: Deb Flynn (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 324 - Computer Ethics, a revision to change the prerequisites to correct a catalogue error; it should read "3 credits in philosophy and computer science..."  It currently reads "or".

PHI 326 - Business Ethics, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly, and consistent with Banner.
Motion: Tricia Lin, Second: Deb Flynn (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 327 - Moral Problems in the Law, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly, and consistent with Banner.
Motion: Deb Flynn, Second: Tricia Lin (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 370 - Philosophy of Education, a revision to change the prerequisites making them more clear, student-friendly (re-opens the course to philosophy students), and consistent with Banner.
Motion: Tricia Lin, Second: Deb Flynn (Passed 8 - 0 - 0)

PHI 398 and PHI 498:  Revised course proposals for PHI 398 and PHI 498 - Special Topics in Philosophy, were not voted on.  After discussion with Dr. R. Volkman, it was decided to table the proposals at this time.  Both revisions call for the addition of prerequisite credits in PHI to these "shell" courses.  It was recommended that the Philosophy Department add prerequisites to each of their future Special Topics course proposals at both the 300- and 400-levels.

REC 341 - Outdoor Group Management, a new course proposal.  The course is a free elective with REC 241 or departmental permission as prerequisites.
