Notifications Management Committee Minutes
November 3, 2005
Present: Tricia Lin (co-chair), Michele Vancour (recorder, co-chair), Kathy Mauro, Rich Glinka, Karen Burke, Jane Feng, Richard Kustin, Nancy Disbrow, Deb Flynn, Troy Rondinone
The committee discussed six proposals: PSC 338, EDU 322, EDU Program Revision Proposal, EDU 309, ANT 490, MDS 150.
PSC 338 - the Committee approved a proposal to change the prerequisite for PSC 338 from 3 PSC credits to 6 PSC credits or departmental permission.
Motion - Kathy Mauro, Second - Nancy Disbrow
Motion passed 8 - 0
EDU 322 - a new course proposal was received for Family, School and Community Partnerships, which will be offered in the Undergraduate Early Childhood Program. Acceptance into the Education Department is the only prerequisite for this course. The proposal was signed by Shirley Jackson, Chair of the Sociology Department as it will replace SOC 322 in the Early Childhood Program (see next item on minutes).
The Committee recommends that the instructor of EDU 322 seek IRB approval for the course requirement option for the oral presentation, which reads, "b) an interview with a parent of a child at the early childhood describing the parent's experiences interacting with teachers, expectations of parent-teacher relationships, and concerns about interacting with teachers."
Motion - Karen Burke, Second - Nancy Disbrow
Motion passed 9 - 1 (abstention)
EDU Undergraduate Early Childhood Program - a revised program proposal was reviewed that called for the replacement of SOC 322: Sociology of the Family with the new education course, EDU 322: Family, School and Community Partnerships as a requirement.
Motion - Karen Burke, Second - Nancy Disbrow
Motion passed 9 - 1 (abstention)
EDU 309 - a revised course proposal form to change the title of the course from Integrated Curriculum for the Young Child I - PreK, K to Curriculum Design and Methods for Preschool and Kindergarten was received for EDU 309.
Motion - Karen Burke, Second - Nancy Disbrow
Motion passed 10 - 0
ANT 490 - Seminar in Anthropology was reviewed and the Committee determined that the contents of the application were in excess of what it needed for a course that appears to have been approved previously. The Committee recommends that the last sentence of the course description, "A major research paper and presentation is required" be removed as academic freedom provides for flexibility in determining the incremental and culminating experiences used for student evaluation.
Note that ANT 490 is already in the course catalog as a requirement for the BA in Anthropology, indicating a previous program change.
Motion - Karen Burke, Second - Richard Kustin
Motion passed 10 - 0
MDS 150 - a new course proposal was received for Buy This Course: Media and Self. This course has been offered three times as MDS 298: Mediated Self, a special topics course. The course would be offered as a free elective with no prerequisites with the intention of exposing non-major freshman and sophomore students to Media Studies.
