Thursday, October 20, 2005
In attendance: Tricia Lin, Co-Chair, Karen Burke, Nancy Disbrow, Jane Feng, Deborah Flynn (recorder), Roy Hunter, Mary Kiarie, Kathy Mauro, Troy Rondinone
The meeting was called to order by Tricia Lin at 9:40 a.m.
Item #1: PCH 351 Health in Society
Proposed: To change the prerequisite to PCH 202 and to eliminate the option to take PCH 202 concurrently
Discussion: An introduction to the field of pubic health (PCH 202) is required to participate in the discussions required in PCH 351 (Health in Society).
Outcome: 7 votes (unanimous) to approve (& members present at the time of this vote)
Item #2: HIS 105
Proposed: A new course to be used as an option for the University-wide requirement
Discussion: This item should first be addressed by UWIC.
Outcome: Will be sent to UWIC for discussion/decision
Item #3: MAT - BS in Applied Mathematics
Proposed: To make changes in the required courses/credits for degree completion
Discussion:
1. NMC needs clarification at to which committee should review program changes/new programs. If this is within the purview of the NMC, then what standards should be followed?
2. Will there be a change in the umber of credits required for the degree? If there is an exchange of credits (i.e., 3 credits added and 3 deleted), then the NMC will approve the change.
Outcome: Send this proposal back with a request for clarification of the credits required for degree completion.
Item #4: MAT - BS in Mathematics (Secondary Education)
Proposed: To add MAT 300 and MAT 378 to required courses for degree completion; to drop 2 MAT electives numbered 207 or higher
Discussion: This change is in response to NCATE. It was suggested that this proposal be used as a model/template.
Outcome: 9 votes (unanimous) to approve
Item #5: MAT 300 History of Mathematics
Proposed: Prerequisites to this course - MAT 130 or MAT 150 (calculus)
Discussion: This course covers a broad history from number systems to calculus.
Outcome: 9 votes (unanimous) to approve
Item #6: MAT 320 Probability & Statistics I
Proposed: Combine separate courses and change existing credits from 3 to 4 with the addition of statistics to the probability course
Discussion: this change was made in response to NCATE. The NMC needs clarification as to whether the required credits for degree completion will be changed and if so, who makes this determination. Also, if this is a program change, then appropriate documentation is required. The proposal states that changes are also being made to MAT 321. How will changes in each of these courses affect the other?
Outcome: Send this proposal back for clarification; suggest that changes for MAT 320 and MAT 321 be sent together.
Item #7: PSC 338
Proposal: Change the prerequisite from sophomore status and 3 PSC credits to 6 PSC credits or departmental permission
Discussion: This change has been previously approved and is already in the 2005-2006 catalog.
Outcome: No action required.
Item #8: PSC Political Science Major
Proposal: Change senior requirement from 1 of 3 PSC courses to a new capstone course
Discussion: This change has already been approved and is in the 2005-2006 catalog.
Outcome: No action required.
Item #9: Discussion of the Standards Document
Questions from the NMC: 1. Is this a discussion that should occur between the Steering Committee and the School Curriculum Committee chairs? The consensus within NMC is that it is difficult to discuss the document in such a large group (as UCF), therefore, a smaller discussion may prove more productive and then provide a foundation for the larger discussion within UCF. 2. What kind of standards document is being presented - an academic standards document or procedural guidelines for course approvals? The NMC needs clarification on these items. Tricia will bring them to the next Steering Committee meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
Motions:
1. Approve revision to PCH 351 Health in Society
2. Approve revision to MAT - BS in Mathematics (Secondary Education)
3. Approve revision to MAT 300 History of Mathematics
