NPIC continued its discussion about writing a policy for the creation of the minor that conforms to existing practice.
NPIC submits the following motion as the standard policy for the creation of minors at Southern CT State University.
"A "Minor" is a planned sequence of 18 credits in one discipline outside of the student's major. The number of required courses necessary to obtain the minor shall be left to the discretion of the department. Any prerequisites necessary for required courses in the minor program should be noted in the catalogue."
This policy does not address interdisciplinary minors. The one question that was raised which we feel merits further discussion by the UCF as a body is whether or not there should be a required number of upper level courses in the minor. The sense of the committee was, that while a certain level of academic rigor is desirable, we are reluctant to dictate to departments what level of courses should be required in a minor. This issues is especially problematic since how departments number courses vary from department to department.
The committee also discussed the question of on-line courses. The consensus of the committee appears to be that NPIC does not have a role in evaluating on-line courses. While we are open to persuasion, the consensus is that on-line courses merely constitute a new method of delivery and thus do not merit separate status and that new on-line courses should follow the same procedure as all new courses. On-line sections of existing courses do not constitute new courses. As a group, we did not reach a decision as to whether or not it constitutes a course revision. The discussion is to be continued.
