NPIC Committee meeting minutes
Thursday, November 15, 2000

Because of the light agenda and the nature of the topic, the meeting was held electronically. The committee discussed the major item of the agenda over e-mail over the course of the week and cast their votes on Thursday.

Attendance: Fopiano, Hawley, Paddock (Chair), Skoczen, Wieder, Yacher

  • Accounting 398 is noted as a special topics course for the spring.
  • Proposal for a minor in Exercise Science

There are no set criteria for a minor beyond the fact that in must have at least 18 credits. The EXS proposal for a minor has six required courses and then offers the student the option to take two more classes from six electives for professional specialization.

The committee had two questions:

  1. Why are students encouraged to take 2 additional courses? A minor is technically 18 credits. The two additional courses make 24 credits and some might see that as unnecessarily excessive for a minor.
  2. There is usually a certain amount of flexibility in minors. Yet all of the students courses are required. There may well be a reason for this, but since no one from EXS is on the committee, an explanation would be helpful.

The EXS chair spoke with Paddock and explained the logic behind the proposal. The guidelines for Liberal Studies claim states that a minor can range from 18-24 credits. Anyone who wants a minor in EXS must take those 6 required courses. If they have particular professional aspirations, depending upon what they are, they can select from the other courses listed. They feel that the minimum standards for competency in the field require the six courses.

There was a general feeling that while six required courses for a minor was a bit unorthodox, it is a decision for the department in question to make.

Concern was also expressed about the frequency of these courses. A cursory look at the last few semester class schedules suggests that the courses will be offered on a regular basis.

The minor was approved 6-0.

These e-minutes have been approved by the participating members (Obviously with corrections as called for).
