Minutes for NPIC, January 24, 2002

W. Elwood, T. Fleming, C. Lukenbeal, T. Paddock (chair) and C. Wieder

The meeting focused on 2 issues:

Continuation of discussion of Dean Fredeen's request to have earlier input in the creation of new programs. The directions and signature sheet have the Dean's name well into the process. The major reason for the Dean's concern is the fact that some new programs require additional expenditures and it is advisable to see whether or not there is administrative support for such programs. This legitimate concern must be balanced against the faculty prerogatives regarding the creation of new programs and whether or not the Dean has "veto power." A tentative solution for the wording was proposed pending further investigation of the contract provisions and discussion with UCF regarding relevant provisions in Senate documents. A final recommendation for changes will be proposed in the minutes from the next meaning.

Discussion of minors: One member suggested that it might be worth the UCF discussing whether or not there should be a re-examination of the minor at SCSU. The quality of the minor varies from department to department. Some are quite rigorous, other less so. NPIC and the UCF recognize that it is the prerogative of the department to establish the guidelines for their respective minors. However, it merits discussing whether or not UCF wants to offer departments that have not had an opportunity to review their requirements for a minor a chance to review their programs and offer some sort of "fast-track" option for instituting program revisions. Paddock promised to mention the issue at the next general UCF meeting.
