NPIC Committee Minutes
Nov 1, 2001

Present: T. Paddock (chair), C. Wieder, P. Hawley, K. Skoczen, T. Flemming, C. Lukinbeal.

Business:

Continued discussion of Latin American and Caribbean Studies minor. Concerns and questions from last meeting were discussed. Dean Fredeen cleared up questions regarding the "housing" of the minor and whether or not there were any resource allocations connected to such. There are none.

K. Skoczen reported that the Anthropology Department is considering renumbering ANT 255 (and altering its content accordingly) to put it on par with the other 300 level courses offered within the Latin American minor.

History will look into their numbering as well.

Approval for Latin American Studies Minor:
4 Yes
0 No
1 Abstention
(1 non-voting member present)

Program revision for minor in Marine Sciences:
Whether NPIC was the appropriate forum for the program revisions for Marine Sciences was discussed, in light of the evident minor changes to the program.

Nonetheless, the criteria for approval by NPIC were met. Namely:
18 credits
the presence of 300 level courses
no hidden credits/prerequisites.

Approval of Marine Sciences minor
5 Yes
0 No
0 Abstentions
(1 non-voting member present)

General discussion ensued about the construction of interdisciplinary minors. The consensus appears to be that any such minor should meet the above mentioned criteria and should also require that students take classes from at least 3 disciplines. This discussion will be continued.
