NPIC Committee Minutes
Oct. 4, 2001
Present: T. Paddock (chair), C. Wieder, P. Hawley, B. Elwood (new member)
The committee was asked to reconsider the FLA proposal Bilingual Education. The committee was asked to consider the following issues:
The requirement of junior standing as potentially limiting options for students who are close but do not have 60 credits.
Whether it is permissible to have required courses in the summer.
The ethics of offering a required course in the summer.
T. Paddock reported the outcome of meeting with Phil Smith: Courses cannot be offered in the Summer unless a) it is also offered during the academic year, or b) there is a suitable substitute available that is offered during the academic year.
Lorrie Verplaetse has, in the view of NPIC, suitably addressed the NPIC's and UCF's concerns regarding the availability of FLA 332. She has proposed that it be offered Fall of odd years and Summer of even years. We believe that this adequately addresses the ethical objections made to the proposal at the last UCF meeting.
She also offered to include the phrase "or with consent of the instructor" to address concerns about the limitation of "junior standing."
The committee additionally discussed the appropriate role of NPIC regarding proposals in Area Studies and addressed issues such as Departmental Discretion regarding the definition of academic rigor, the requirement of language components.
It was suggested that UCF as a whole be queried about its view on NPIC's requesting some demonstration of academic rigor in Area Studies.
