New Programs and Innovations Committee
Minutes of March 4, 2004
Present: L. Bier, C. Dellinger-Pate, R. Eldridge, W. O'Brien (Chair), C. Weider
The Committee continued the review of the Media Studies program modification proposal. W. O'Brien informed the committee that he had checked with Jim Tait about coversheets, and it was decided that both would be included with an explanation of why both were being included. W. O'Brien also confirmed that the necessary letters of support from other departments are included. After confirming the definition of the term transnational corporate owner, it was moved and seconded that we accept the proposal. All voted in favor.
The Committee next began the review of the proposal of the new Media Studies minor. C. Dellinger-Pate stated that she had followed the existing model for a minor used by the History and Sociology departments in their recent revisions to their minor programs.
The committee discussed the proposal. One member wanted to know to whom the new minor would be targeted. C. Dellinger-Pate indicated that many students were already inquiring about a minor in Media Studies and that it would be a good complement for many Liberal Studies majors, including Journalism, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. One member questioned whether the appropriate responses had been gathered from other departments/units. C. Dellinger-Pate established that this was required only for minors that include courses taught in other departments, such as interdisciplinary minors. Minor changes were suggested for the wording and punctuation of the catalog copy, the Summary of Rationale, and the Brief Abstract of Proposal. It was moved and seconded that the committee accept the proposal. All voted in favor.

Previously Tabled Motion:
To make clear the nature and purpose of Special Topics courses for both students and faculty, New Programs and Innovations Committee moves that the following copy be included on the UCF web page and in the Schedule of Classes booklet as indicated below:
For inclusion as the first item on the UCF web page for Special Topics Courses:
Special Topics (X98) courses are offered periodically on an "experimental basis" reflecting faculty interests on topically important subjects. These are typically courses in the process of development. Special topics courses are not a permanent part of the curriculum, and may be offered at most three times.
For inclusion in a section on the UCF web page to be headed Procedure for Offering Special Topics Course Sections:
Initial and subsequent procedures for offering Special Topics X98 course sections follow:
The faculty member develops the X98 course section and completes the Special Topics Notification Section form, available on the UCF web site.
The proposal is reviewed by the faculty member's DCC.
The completed UCF form (along with any support materials) is submitted to UCF.
A form for a Special Topics X98 course section must be submitted each time the course is to be offered in time for the course to be included in the schedule of classes. Submission deadlines are included in the Forms section of the UCF web page under Special Topics Course.
For inclusion in the new Special Topics Section of the Schedule of Classes book:
