Minutes of NPIC subcommittee of the UCF

October 9, 2003

Members Present: Lisa Bier, Charlie Dellinger-Pate, Robert Eldridge Wes O'Brien, Chuck Wieder, Claire Novosad

I. Special Topics courses:

  • The committee logged the following special topics proposal (the committee logged the special topics course last meeting, but inadvertently failed to log its cross listing in Women's Studies) WMS 498: Hawaiian History and Culture.
  • The chairperson reported that he had e-mailed Rick Riccardi who in turn spoke to Lynn Kohrn regarding improvement to the identification of special topics courses in the course schedule. After discussing information from Riccardi, the committee made three recommendations for change:

  1. The listing in the course schedules for special topics courses should be reversed so the title of the course precedes the special topic information. The first line would read: ABC X98: Course Title and the second line under the title would read: Info: Special Topics in ABC, see special topics section for further information.
  2. A special topics section should be included in the schedule, similar to the section on winter session courses. This section would include the special topics title and course description, much like the description of courses in the course catalog.
  3. The special topics section would include a brief statement describing the nature of special topic courses at SCSU. The exact wording on this statement is forthcoming.
  • The committee asked Wes O'Brien to have the steering committee further clarify NPIC's role with regard to special topics courses. Specifically, this committee would like to know what the term "monitor' means in the constitution for the NPIC.
  • Committee members discussed two special topics proposals submitted by Urban Studies and expressed concern over the clarity of the proposals. It was not clear as to the whether both of the proposals were for two special topics courses, and neither proposal included course descriptions. The committee recommended sending the proposals back to the author of the proposals for further clarification.
  • Committee members recommended that the special topics proposal from Earth Science, 398, needed to have the signatures of department chairperson and DCC chairperson before NPIC logs it in the record.
  • Committee members raised questions as to why special topics proposals have the UCF Chairperson's signature prior to going to NPIC. Wes is to consult with the steering committee on the matter.

Other

The question as to the course credit hours of a specialization has been presented to Jim Tait and he has passed it to Phil Smith. The question was regarding whether a department can have more than 18 hours in a specialization.
