MEETING MINUTES OF OCTOBER 6, 2005

NPIC - New Programs and Innovations Committee

Members present: Debbie Weiss (Chair), Adam Abugri, (Co-Chair), Nancy Bobrek (Recording), Charlie Dellinger-Pate, Joe Goralski, Betty Horn, Jessica Kenty-Drane, Doris Marino, Rachel Vaters-Carr.

Call to Order - Debbie Weiss called the meeting to order at 9:45 a.m.

Notification of New Special Topics Courses - The first item of business was the presentation of 7 new Special Topics Courses. Three courses presented by the Honors College were submitted on an incorrect version of the Special Topics Courses form.  Therefore, a motion was made by Rachael Vaters-Carr to send these three course forms back to the Honors College to be resubmitted on the correct form. The motion was seconded by Adam Abugri and was passed unanimously.

Four additional Special Topics courses were presented and logged:

ART 298                  History of Roman Art

EDU 398                  Family, School Community Partnerships

MAT 398/WMS 398   Women, Math and Science

WMS 498                 Women & Education

Adam Abugri made a motion that the four courses presented be logged. The motion was seconded by Rachel Vaters-Carr and passed unanimously.

Deadline Dates for Special Topics Courses to Appear in the Printed Course Schedule - The second item of business pertained to deadline dates for Special Topics course submissions, when course instructors wish to ensure that their course will appear in the printed course schedule.  Debbie Weiss presented recommended dates provided by the University Registrar, Bob Drobish. These dates are as follows:

Summer Special Topics Courses - January 2nd
Fall Special Topics Courses - Feb. 1st
Spring Special Topics Courses - June 1st.

Based on the dates submitted by Bob Drobish, the NPIC members require the submission of correctly executed forms two weeks prior for logging.  Dates were further adjusted in order to make allowance for winter break. The following motion was made by Doris Marino:

Based on the print deadline  provided by Administration, we recommend that a correctly-executed form for summer and fall Special Topics Courses be submitted to NPIC by December 1st. Forms for spring Special Topics Courses should be submitted by May 1st, in order to appear in the printed course schedule.

The motion was seconded by Joe Goralski and passed unanimously.  The following schedule has been approved:

Session                                       Date to Bob Drobish                 Date to NPIC

Summer Special Topics Courses      January                                 December 1
Fall Special Topics Courses              Feb. 1                                   December 1
Spring Special Topics Courses         June 1                                   May 1

Deadline Dates for Special Topics Courses to Appear in the Banner System

The third item of business was the deadline date for Special Topics Courses to appear in the Banner System.  Because Banner is an electronic system, which offers ease of updating, these dates are less stringent than the dates for the printed course schedule. It was also noted by several members of the committee that last minute additions to Banner can be facilitated by the Deans of the respective schools, which has already been happening.

However, for those instructors who have missed the print deadline and wish to have their courses appear in Banner by the time registration begins, Bob Drobish provided the following deadline dates:

Summer Special Topics Courses - Feb. 1st

Fall Special Topics Courses - Feb. 21st

Spring Special Topics Courses - Sept. 28th.

The following motion was made by Rachael Vaters-Carr:

In order for Special Topics courses that did not make the deadline for the printed catalog to be listed in the online Banner schedule, by the time registration begins, it is recommended  that a correctly-executed form for summer Special Topics Courses be submitted to NPIC by Dec. 1st. Forms for fall Special Topics Courses should be submitted by Feb. 8th  and forms for spring Special Topics Courses should be submitted  by Sept. 8th. This does not preclude Special Topics Courses from being added online at a later date.

The motion was seconded by Betty Horn and passed unanimously.  The following schedule has been approved:

Session                                         Date to Bob Drobish            Date to NPIC

Summer Special Topics Courses       Feb. 1                                December 1
Fall Special Topics Courses              Feb. 21                               February 8

Spring Special Topics Courses         Sept. 28                              September 8

Adjournment - A motion to adjourn was made by Adam Abugri, with a second by Rachel Vaters-Carr.  The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy J. Bobrek, Recorder
