NPIC MINUTES
 
MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 22, 2005

New Programs and Innovations Committee

Members present: Adam Abugri, (Chair), Nancy Bobrek (Recording), Tom Fleming, Joe Goralski, Betty Horn, Jessica Kenty-Drane, Doris Marino, Rachel Vaters-Carr, Deborah Weiss

Adam Abugri called the meeting to order 9:40 a.m.

The first major item of business was the election of a Chair and Co-Chair for the committee.  Adam discussed briefly the responsibilities of the Chair and the time commitment involved in attending the Steering Committee Meetings, which are held on Mondays prior to the general meeting of the UCF. There was a motion to nominate Deborah Weiss, of the Communication Disorders Department, as the new Chair of the NPIC.  The vote was unanimous. Adam Abugri will assume the role of Co-Chair.

Some discussion was held regarding the current form for Special Topics Proposals, which was updated in the winter of 2005.  Several other versions are also being used. It was suggested that the UCF should forward an electronic version of the appropriate form for Special Topics Courses to every faculty member and the Departmental Curriculum Committees to advise them of the correct form to use.

A discussion followed regarding a timeline for the submission of Special Topics Courses in time for them to be listed in the Course Schedule.  This is important since Special Topics Courses do not appear in the catalog.  It was noted that Nikos Chrissidis, Chair of the University-Wide Impact Committee, is working on developing such a timeline. Adam will send an email to Nikos to inquire how far along he is in this process. It was also decided that Deborah Weiss, Chair of the NPIC,  should verify this date with Bob Drobish. The NPIC members would like to ensure that they receive the appropriate forms for Special Topics Courses before the Chair of the UCF signs off on them. This will require an "approved proposal" 6-8 weeks in advance.

Four Special Topics Courses were presented and logged:

JRN 298-01 -  Introduction to Photojournalism

JRN 298-02 - Television Sports Features

ITA 498/LIT 498 - Politics of Desire

SPA 398 - La Cultura Musical del Caribe (Musical Culture of the Caribbean)

The meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m.
