Program Review and Assessment Committee
Minutes - 10/12/2000

Present: E. Aboelela, C. Coron, B. Gelbach, J.Halstead, B. Kottler, W. Shyam, J. Yang

The meeting was called to order by chairperson, Cynthia Coron, at 11:10 a.m.

The minutes of the meeting on 9/28 were approved. Bob Gelbach presented an addendum to the minutes consisting of a summary of the committee's past experience in attempting to implement a policy on program assessment. Discussion of key features of assessment from the meeting of 9/28 were tabled in order to study the summary of the assessment process and to prepare for the meeting with Dick Gerber and Ellen O'Sullivan of the Assessment Office.

These are the committee's observations after analyzing the summary:

The assessment process was slow.
Some of the agreements outlined in the policy such as dispersal of information through a memorandum to the PRA during the assessment process, was not being fulfilled.
The PRA identified the need for a good, workable assessment plan.
During a joint meeting, the PRA and the Assessment Office would identify the existing problems and strive to arrive at a more efficient assessment process.
The committee agreed that our mission was to devise a workable plan acting in an advisory rather than supervisory role.
It was suggested that we survey key personnel who have been instrumental in departmental accreditations in the recent past to identify issues or problems encountered during the assessment process.

The meeting adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
