PROGRAM REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE
Minutes of: Sep 23rd 2004
Present: K. Cummings, M. Kennedy, R. Mugno, H. Podnar (co-chair), E. Schmitt, W. Shyam, L. Yacher.
Started: 10:05am.
At the beginning of the meeting Dr. Kennedy distributed copies of a number of assessment related materials. The materials included:
- The list of SCSU assessment grant proposals funded by either CSU or by the Office of Academic Affairs (copies available upon request). The complete proposals could be obtained given the PI's permission.
- 'Beginning College Student Survey 2004-05' given to the SCSU freshmen. The survey is a part of the NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement) service. (Copies available upon request.)
- 'College Student Report 2004' survey (NSSE). The new web version of the survey will be administered to second semester freshmen and second semester seniors.
(copy @: www.indiana.edu/~nsse/pdf/survey_instruments/NSSE_2004_survey.pdf) - 'Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education'.
(copy @: honolulu.hawaii.edu/intranet/committees/FacDevCom/guidebk/teachtip/7princip.htm) - 'Draft Standards for Accreditation' by Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (NEASC).
(copy @: neasc.org/cihe/revisions/standards_revision.htm)
Dr. Kennedy mentioned that SCSU might have participated in a NSSE test survey project during 2000/2001 academic year. She will investigate to obtain the details about the test run.
Members reviewed the presented materials and highlighted that the surveys should be administered in such a manner to encourage increase in student survey return rates.
A short discussion about faculty surveys followed. Dr. Kennedy explained that the HERI (Higher Education Research Institute) Faculty Survey collects data about climate, morale, status of technology, interaction with students and relationship with administration. Members expressed their opinion about the significance of the final reporting process. It was underlined that the surveys' final results need to be reported back to the faculty that participated, and addressed.
Given the reports regarding the student and faculty surveys, members continued with a discussion about possible ways of assessing the administration. One of the members noticed that this task might be the faculty senate responsibility.
Members focused their efforts on the definition of the PRAC role for this academic year. A suggestion was given about following the graduate school model. This discussion will continue at the next meeting, with each member asked to specify a list of possible PRAC goals.
