SHE 203 and AUR Health Requirement

Prof. Faraclas attended to contribute to UWIC's ongoing consideration of EXS's proposal to have its teacher certification students elect SHE 203 to fulfill the AUR Health requirement.

Faraclas illuminated points made at the December UCF meeting and responded to UWIC questions that have emerged after talking with School Health faculty.  Some of PCH's positions are:

-- SHE 203 is defined in the catalogue and its syllabus as a professional training course for teachers

-- in the past (c. 1987-1994), Academic VP Pinciaro stipulated that School Health's purpose was teacher certification and Public Health would provide health courses for university requirements (with the exception of art education and special education)

-- current PCH health requirement courses (100 and 201) fulfill the AUR guidelines by teaching students about ways to evaluate their values and behaviors; they do not simply present information.  UWIC asked for more documentation of this from PCH (course exams, handouts, other required projects or exercises, etc.)

-- given the above, PCH believes that SHE 203 does not fulfill the SCSU AUR Health requirement; it is a legitimate and required course for teacher certification students that is appropriate as a cognate course to the major (with the exception of art ed and special ed  grandfathered into earlier articulations)

UWIC agreed to devote its next meeting to evaluating the information received at its two meetings with  School Health and Public Health.  UWIC thanks both faculty for their collegiality and good will in meeting with us and providing details on their academic activities.
