UNIVERSITY-WIDE IMPACT COMMITTEE

27 January 2000

Members Present:  Amenta, Beals, DiFrancesco, Harris, Macomber,
Mindell, Swenson;  for early part of meeting, the GenEd Review sub-
committee (Chevan, Lancor, Shea, Tait)

Exercise Science Proposal

UWIC determined that SHE 203 does not fulfill the articulated
guidelines for the All-University Health requirement.  The committee
reached its decision after careful examination of a SHE 203 course
syllabus and the AUR document.

VOTE:  7-0 to deny EXS request to use SHE 203 as its AUR
Health requirement.

Use of SHE 203 for AUR Health Requirement in Teacher Certification
Programs

UWIC discussed the ongoing use of SHE 203 in most other
teacher certification programs.  No decisions were made but the
following options were proposed:

1.  should all certification programs move SHE 203 to a
cognate course and use PCH 100 or 201 as their AUR in Health?

2.  can SHE 203 be modified to include personal wellness
(the guidelines for SCSU AUR in Health)?  could such a course be
taught by SHE faculty, or team taught by PCH and SHE  faculty?
would such a course be acceptable to state teacher certification
bodies?

3.  what resolution is best for students?

4.  did unauthorized alterations of CPR forms make SHE 203
the AUR Health requirement in some programs (as alleged by PCH at
the Dec. 1999 UCF meeting)?  If so, UWIC felt it imperative to
reassert that faculty bodies (UCF and its predecessors) have control
of curriculum.  This is mandated by AAUP contract and by the
constitution of the UCF.
