UWIC Proposal Regarding AURs:
The University Wide Impact Committee makes the following recommendations concerning the prerogative of departments to restrict the choices in the All University Requirement courses:
1. Any request to restrict choices in the AUR courses that constitutes a change in the CPR for a department must be accompanied by a written rationale from the department and must be approved by the appropriate subcommittee of the UCF.
2. In its degree programs, a department has the prerogative to restrict the choices in the AUR category in which its department has courses.
3. In degree programs that are subject to licensing and/or accreditation requirements from an outside agency, the offering department has the prerogative to restrict the choices in the AUR category or categories where mandates from the outside agencies are concerned. For example, teacher certification programs restrict the choices in the Health category to SHE 203, whose course competencies are mandated by the state of Connecticut.
4. In degree programs offered by a department where the content of a specific AUR is deemed mandatory by the department for competency in its field, the department has the prerogative to restrict the AUR choice to that option that provides the required competency. For example, the Physics Department deems it necessary that all physics majors have Calculus I, II, and III. Since Calculus I (MAT 150) is one of the courses that satisfies the mathematics AUR, the Physics Department restricts its majors to MAT 150 as its university requirement in the mathematics category.
The above recommendations are for changes that would be made to CPR forms after the Fall 2001 semester or to changes in CPR forms that have never been approved by the UCF.
Southern Writing Board:
Harris informed the committee that following the UCF Steering Committee meeting, the UCF discussion on the Southern Writing Board has been pushed back to Nov. 8. UWIC members then spent some time discussing the Writing Board and agreed to look over the Writing Board's ''Time to Teach'' report prior to discussing and making its own recommendations at the next UWIC meeting.
