Revised Proposal for ENG 217:

Discussion related to "themes" for course sections.  Each theme is approved through the Department Curriculum Committee.  Consistent course criteria isn't feasible because of differences in the nature of the classes, e.g. novel, short story, poetry.  The various "themes" allow faculty to teach to their specific interest.  The previous framework for the course lead to inconsistencies in how the course was taught.  Some sections were structured as in-depth upper level courses.

The revised course proposal introduces student outcomes, designed to establish consistency in what is expected of students.  The revision also provides a conceptual approach, and a broader means to work with the world through language.  This is consistent with the aims of a general education requirement.

The revised proposal for ENG 217 is unanimously approved, considering it already existed as a "shell" course.  The revised course is viewed as better for students than as it previously existed.
