University Wide Impact Committee

Minutes of 11/14/02

Co-Chairs:  Shelley Bochain, Terese Gemme

Present:  N. Henderson, J. DeMarco, C. Ogbaa, S. DiFrancesco, N. Morano, T. Van, C. Barrett
Guest:  M. Shea

Recorder:  C. Barrett

The committee met to consider the ENG 217 Themes in Literature revision proposal.  M. Shea attended the meeting to provide history of ENG 217 and explain the proposal.  According to M. Shea, ENG 217 was approved by UCIC around 1987 as an option to meet the university literature requirement.  It was established a course that would cover different literary genres by approval from the English department.  It could be taught as an "L" as well.  The English department would like to change the name from "Themes of Literature" to "Introduction to Literature," creating a new rubric that would make the course more skill based.  Individual themes would still be developed and approved by the English department.

The committee tabled the proposal until the next meeting in order to gather more information from UCIC minutes, past catalogs and persons who were involved in the approval of ENG 217.  The committee's concern is can an individual theme course for ENG 217 be revised or a new course be written and accepted by only going through the department itself and can a new course receive an "L" designation through only the department?
