MINUTES Of Thursday, September 19, 2002

Present: Shelley Bochain (Co-Chair), Sandy DiFrancesco, Joanne DeMarco,
Terese Gemme (Co-Chair), Elizabeth Johnston, Lisa Lancor (Guest Presenter)
Recorder: Terese Gemme
Call to Order: 9:40 a.m.
The meeting was devoted to a discussion of a proposal written by John DaPonte and Lisa Lancor from the Computer Science Department entitled "An Alternate Plan for Implementing Computer Literacy into the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum." Lisa Lancor discussed the proposal and its implications. Presently, SCSU has no All-University requirement for computer literacy. The proposal suggests incorporating certain computer skills into core classes in the English, Mathematics, and Communications departments. Topics to be covered would include the use of e-mail, web navigation, word processing, spreadsheet calculations, and presentation graphics. The intent is for the computer skills to be used in the class but not necessarily to be taught in the class. The material would be covered by workshops and presentations offered by the Academic Computer Center.
There was consensus that the proposal addresses a real need on campus. The Communications Department is already addressing a lot of these issues in their classes, and feels that there is a definite need for SCSU to address students' lack of computer skills. There was some concern as to the actual implementation of this program. ETAC (Education Technology Advisory Committee) is on board with this and will have to work in conjunction with ACC to provide more details about how this will be implemented, i.e, how many workshops will be neede? How frequently will they be held? What additional staffing will be needed to accomplish this?
