Discussion Topic: HIS 104: Islamic Civilization, for Inclusion in the All-University Requirement in History of World Civilizations

Members discussed the viability of HIS 104: Islamic Civilization, in meeting the guidelines for consideration as an All-University Requirement. As stated in the course rationale, currently only two introductory courses, HIS 100 and HIS101 are available for students to take under the World History requirement. Members discussed the rationale and felt that having an additional 100-level course would be a positive move to give students another option at the introductory level.

One member asked a question was asked about having a "religion based" course as an AUR. Another member of UWIC, Nikos Chrissidis, History Department, clarified that the focus of
HIS 104 was for students to understand Islam not just as a religion but as "a way of life." After a discussion concerning the importance of the Middle East and the growth of the Islamic religion, members voted to approve HIS 104: Islamic Civilization as a course that would fulfill the World Civilization requirement: 6 votes for and 1 member abstaining.

UCF Motion:  To accept HIS 104 as an All University Requirement that meets the
World Civilization requirement for the undergraduate degree.

The meeting adjourned at 10:50 am.
