University Wide Impact Committee

Minutes of  3/18/04

Chair:  Shelley Bochain
Attending:  C. Barrett, S. Bochain, S. Difrancesco, K. Gatzke, N. Marano

Guest:  Sandy Bulmer (Chair, Student Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate)

Discussion Topic:  Academic Honesty

The focus of the Student Policy Committee has been on prevention of the problem academic dishonesty.  The committee developed a freshman orientation module which was presented to students last summer.  In addition the topic was part of the new faculty orientation.

Issues that need to be addressed include the following:

- Enforcement aspects (different deans may have different ideas, faculty will want to maintain control, some faculty are completely opposed to any enforcement policy)

- Hearing procedure (faculty and student representation should be included in the process)

- Dissemination of a standard statement for all course syllabi, similar to that of the DRO would be an effective pro-active strategy

- Are the issues the same for undergraduate and graduate courses?

The student policy committee will be hosting a university-wide forum on this topic sometime in April.  The proposed date is April 23rd from 1-3 PM.  The format will include short introductions presenting current prevention and enforcement efforts, followed by faculty discussion.
