University Curriculum Forum Subcommittee Minutes
University Wide Impact Committee

Minutes 5/06/04

Chair: Shelley Bochain
Attending: C. Barrett, S. Bochain, N, Chrissidis, S. DiFrancesco, S. Jackson, N. Marano.

Started:  9:40am

Discussion Topic:   Revised Program Proposal for German Studies  (Foreign Languages)
           German BA and BS Programs
GER 201 Continuing German: Contemporary German Culture
GER 202  Continuing German: Exploring a German City
           GER 203  Exploring German Culture

Observations:
• The proposal adds three more credits to the program of study.
• The proposal offers greater opportunity for students to choose among courses.
• Pedagogical innovations outlined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages provide the impetus for program change.

Concerns:
• Why will GER 208 & GER 210 be deleted?  This is not explicit in the rationale.
• For the all university requirement (AUR) there is no rationale for the proposed changes.  Student placement issues are not well addressed, and the CPR form changes, fail to clearly articulate the written description of the changes.

Recommendations:
• Clarify changes on the CPR form (change from 3 cr. to 6 cr.)
• Update entire CPR form to highlight what is being changed for the UAR versus the GER major.
• A courtesy review by the chair of the Education Dept. is suggested, as the proposed change will affect advisement to student in the School of Ed.

Discussion Topic:   ENG 110 Composition: Writing Lab  (Presently ENG 98) 3 cr.
           ENG 111 Composition I (Presently ENG 100) 3 cr.
ENG 112 Composition II (Presently ENG 101) 3 cr.
Observations:
• The proposed change in numbering is predicated by the acceptance of ENG 98 as a 3 credit course
MOTION:  The proposed change in numbering of the following English courses be implemented: ENG 110 replaces ENG 98, ENG 111 replaces ENG 100 and  ENG 112 replaces ENG 101.

Discussion Topic:  Chair of UWIC for 2004-2005 year  is N. Chrissidis 6-0 vote.
