University Wide Impact Committee

Minutes of: December 9, 2004 (revised)

Meeting room: EN D 062

Present:

Sandy DiFrancesco, Ken Gatzke, Shirley Jackson, Chang Suk Kim, Kim Laing, Nancy Marano, Wes O'Brien, Bill Phelan, Nikos Chrissidis (chair).

Guests: Kelly Ritter, Nicole Henderson

Opening:

Meeting started with welcoming new member Bill Phelan from the Art department and guests Kelly Ritter and Nicole Henderson from the English department.

Revised Course Proposal: ENG 097 - Tutorial in Basic English
Kelly Ritter presented the revised course proposal for ENG 097. The old ENG 098 was split into two courses: ENG 110 (a three credit course already approved by UCF) and ENG 097 (a zero credit course with 2 load hours).

Students who place into ENG 097 will take ENG 097 and ENG 110 concurrently. One section of 110 will be reserved for these students. The instructor teaching this section of 110 will also be teaching the section of 097. Kelly indicated about 12 students place into ENG 097 and the capacity on the course will be 12. Over enrollments may be considered if needed.

ENG 097 - Tutorial in Basic English is designed to assist students needing individualized instruction in grammar, usage, and basic language skills.

Nikos Chrissidis made motion to approve ENG 097

Wes O'Brien seconded

Unanimously Approved

We thanked Kelly and Nicole for coming and presenting this proposal. We found their comments to be interesting and helpful.

There was some discussion about notifying advisors about non-credit courses carrying load credit. When a student registers for a non-credit course (i.e. MAT 095, ENG 097) he/she has load credits for purposes of full-time status and financial aid. Some advisors are recommending students take additional courses to get the 12 credits. This is not necessary and may be detrimental to this particular population of students.

Revised Course Proposal: GEO 100 - People, Places, and Environments
This is a request for title change. Discussion included:

- Contact Hours listed as 2 ½. It was thought that this was supposed to be 3.

- Concern over the title. Are places and environments the same thing? We decided to defer to the School Curriculum Committee who had already approved the course.

Shirley Jackson made motion to approve GEO 100 title change

- with change of contact hours from 2 ½  to 3.

Wes O'Brien seconded.

Unanimously Approved

Nikos will present the contact hour issue to Leon Yacher.

Revised Course Proposal: GEO 103 - People, Places, and Environments
This is a request for title change. When we received the proposal Shirley Jackson contacted Leon Yacher with a question about the same title for two courses. Dr. Yacher indicated GEO 103 had not been offered in some time and was an honors course.

The committee discussed honors courses being offered through the Honors College with subject codes of HON. If Dr. Yacher would like to present this as an honors course, an additional signature would be needed and a different course number.

The contact hours should be 3 instead of 2 ½.

There was again discussion on the title; being the same as another course and 'places' and 'environments' being the same thing.

Nikos Chrissidis will return the proposal to Leon Yacher with the committees comments.

Other Business:

The committee discussed the benefit of having the person making the proposal present as was the case with Kelly Ritter today. However it was decided that members of the committee would review proposals prior to the meeting and we would extend an invitation when we thought it beneficial or necessary.
