UWIC

Meeting Minutes 11/4/04

Present:  N.Chrissidis, Chair, S. Di Francesco, K. Gatzke, S. Jackson, C. Suk Kim, K. Laing, N. Marano, W. O'Brien

UWIC convened at 9:45am to discuss two topics: (a) German courses in proposed program change, and (b) the UCF charge that UWIC discuss the issue of program representation on the UCF.

There was a general discussion of (a) in which questions were posed regarding the effect of the proposal of three new courses, GER 201,202,203, on placement of students as a result of their scores on placement exams.  It was noted that GER 298 had 200 and 210 as prerequisites, and a question was raised whether the new 201, 202, and 203 would be accepted, too, since none of the other languages have a similar structure.  The discussion was ended without more exploration because the Chair had been informed by Dan Soneson that the Foreign Language Department will retract the original proposal and revise and resubmit it.

There was a general discussion of (b), the topic of UCF representation for programs as separate from departments.  There was discussion of proposed criteria for recognizing a program, of whether the Faculty Senate was discussing this topic, and whether this was in any way a constitutional issue.  Although the members present generally favored programs being represented on the UCF, a theme throughout the discussion was whether this topic properly belongs to UWIC.  The members of the committee were polled, and by a show of hands it was unanimously determined that it does not.

There was consensus that the attempt at the last meeting of the whole UCF to settle the issue of representation of programs was unwieldy and unsuccessful, yet, there was consensus that the issue of representation is a UCF-wide matter.  As a consequence, there was general agreement that the Steering Committee of UCF should take up the matter, and UWIC's Chair was directed to bring this matter to the Steering Committee.  He was urged to raise there questions regarding: the criteria for program identification; the issue of representation of programs that do not have their own faculty but share it with a number of departments; and whether programs should be considered for UCF representation only upon requesting it, or whether there should be some blanket offering of representation to all programs.

The meeting adjourned at 10:30am.
