Present

N. Chrissidis, S. DiFrancesco, K. Gatzke, G. Kowalczyk, K. Laing, N. Marano, J. Mielczarski, W. O'Brien, B. Phelan, E. West

I. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 9:40 AM.

II. Old Business

N. Chrissidis read the motion passed at the UWIC meeting on 12/7/05. (The motion, which was considered at the 12/15/05 UCF meeting, called for the inclusion of the 1983 "All-University Requirements" document in the new "Standards for Undergraduate Curriculum Proposals" document and for provisions in the new standards document that AUR proposals be guided by the 1983 AUR document. The general body tabled the motion and remanded back to UWIC the task of determining what the binding standards were for undergraduate course proposals in terms of the satisfaction of AURs.)

The present meeting of UWIC dealt specifically with this assignment from the general UCF body.

We established that in order to meet the request of the UCF, we had to:

discover what binding decisions have been made regarding AURs;

based on the binding decisions, discuss what the binding standards are;

make a motion (to be submitted to UCF) detailing what UWIC recommends that the university standards be for AUR course proposals.

N. Chrissidis provided UWIC with copies of:

1) the current undergraduate catalog;

2) the 1996 Strategic Plan General Education Objectives;

3) the 1994 SURGER (Subcommittee Undertaking the Review of General Education Requirements) report;

4) the General Education Review Final Report to the UCF prepared by the General Education Subcommittee of UWIC (May 8, 2002); and,

5) the 1983 All-University Requirements document.

The members of UWIC reviewed all of these documents, and paid attention to the history of general education at Southern as outlined on pp. 5-7 of the General Education Review Final Report to the UCF, dated May 8, 2002.

The conclusions of UWIC were as follows:

The undergraduate catalog is legally binding.

The 1996 Strategic Plan was rejected, so it is not binding.

The 1994 SURGER report was approved but never implemented, so it is not binding.

The General Education Task Force's job has not, as of yet, moved to the implementation phase of the goals outlined in the document "The Liberal Education Program."

The 1983 All-University Requirements document is binding.

Therefore, in the judgment of UWIC, the only document that is in force regarding the standards for AURs in undergraduate course proposals is the 1983 document.

K. Laing moved that the following motion be approved. N. Chrissidis seconded. There were 10 yeas and 0 neas.

"All evidence available to UWIC shows that the 1983 SCSU All-University Requirements document is the only binding document regarding All-University Requirements. Therefore, UWIC moves to bring back its motion that was tabled by the UCF on December 15, 2005."

III. Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 10:35.
