Minutes 11/17/05

I. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 9:45.

II. New Business

UWIC received a proposal from the Notifications Management Committee (NMC) for a new course, HIS 105, Introduction to Southeast Asia, Southeast Asia to 1500.
 
The floor was opened up for discussion.

Some concerns were raised concerning rationales for AURs.  The specific course proposal has a clear rationale for the course, but the rationale doesn't address why it meets an all-university requirement.  UWIC was interested in how the proposed course fits in with existing courses in the department that meet the AUR requirement for world civilizations.  N. Chrissidis explained that the proposed course would make two significant contributions to the history department offerings: add an important world region to the substantial list of regionally-based history courses that are already offered; and serve as preparation for popular courses on the Vietnam War.

UWIC would suggest that, in the future, course proposals for AURs should specifically include in their rationale how the course meets AUR requirements and how it fits with other departmental courses already satisfying the AUR requirement.

UWIC also indicates that since HIS 105 can be an elective in the program, the History Department needed to submit a Revised Program proposal to this aim.

C.S. Kim moved to approve the proposed HIS 105 course. B. Phelan seconded it. There were 6 yeas, 0 neas, and 2 abstentions.

UWIC also discussed the idea of inviting course proposers to attend our sub-committee meetings so as to speed up the process of course approval.

Subsequently, UWIC considered the standards for undergraduate curriculum proposals document.  UWIC decided to continue the discussion in a future meeting, with an eye towards offering concrete suggestions regarding instructions for AUR course proposals.

The meeting adjourned at 10:52 AM.

UCF approves HIS 105, "Introduction to Southeast Asian: Southeast Asia to 1500" as an AUR.
