I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 9:40 a.m.
II. Introductions
Members of the sub-committee introduced themselves.
III. New Business
UCF charged UWIC to investigate university policies on academic misconduct and to develop a timeline for the submission of new and revised course proposals. This meeting dealt with the latter of these issues. UWIC discussed the fact that it was being asked to revisit this task, which it already performed the previous year. At that time, a timeline was submitted to the UCF, but no action was taken since a number of objections were raised. The members agreed that last year UWIC worked hard to develop the previous timeline.
Several problems with new course proposals were discussed, including: the circumvention by some departments of the approval process by submitting changes directly to John Mattia; the importance of the University administration having the necessary information in order to reject scheduling requests for courses that have not gone through the approval process; finally, the late submission by some departments of course proposals, resulting in the failure of the course to appear in the semester schedule.
After discussion, UWIC arrived at the following timeline for the progression of new and revised course proposals and revised program proposals:
Public Affairs / Catalog March 15
Provost March 1-14
UCF (General Body) February 16-28
UCF Sub-Committees December - February 15
SCC November
DCC and Department September - October
UWIC approved by unanimous vote (10-0) this timeline for the submission of new and revised course proposals and revised program proposals. The timeline guarantees that, if a proposal is approved by March 14, it will be included in the course catalog of the academic year beginning in September of the said year.
It is important to note that based on this timeline, if the UCF approves a proposal after February 28, the proposal may not appear in the course catalog until one academic year later. Additionally, it was brought up that the chairs of subcommittees should notify departments promptly of their decisions. Finally, it is important during the winter months that committees make sure that they meet deadlines despite snow days.
VI. Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 10:49 AM.
Submitted by: E. West
Motion to be submitted to the general body for approval.
"UCF approves the following timeline for the flow of new and revised course proposals and revised program proposals.
Public Affairs / Catalog March 15
Provost March 1-14
UCF (General Body) February 16-28
UCF Sub-Committees December - February 15
SCC November
DCC and Department September - October
The above timeline guarantees that, if a proposal for a new or revised course, or a revised program is approved by March 14 of a given academic year, the changes will be included in the course catalog of the next academic year.
Proposers should bear in mind that the above timeline is a best case scenario, and does not take into consideration unforeseen delays."
