K. Marsland gives update on how many upcoming W courses will be offered.
Update on the chairs meeting. Some public support for WAC in general. But it was a rushed meeting. We will be meeting with them at the beginning of the next Chair's meeting. They were pleased to hear that we will be doing a faculty survey. Kate talks about the process by which the survey will be sent out.
K. Marsland mentions the Summer Teaching Academy and how much writing will be going on there. The last day will be a workshop during which instructors will be invited to join in-including non-W teachers.
Meeting with Provost to be rescheduled.
Flow of proposals: question of "pocket approvals" what that means exactly. Clarification of what "no action" means. K. Marsland will revise and distribute via email.
UCF discussion of scheduling and how some think deadlines are too loose for new program courses, while others think that deadlines are too strict. Help from Bob Drobish forthcoming to clarify the scheduling timeline now that the printed schedule has been discontinued.
Dean DonnaJean Fredeen arrives to discuss summer W-scheduling concerns. Discussion of specific rationale for W courses in Summer so that deans have information necessary to make scheduling decisions-more detail, more rationale, revised syllabus and schedule. DJ says deans need a statement detailing what Summer W course instructors need to provide to the deans. Discussion of establishing "protocol" for future Summer W course actions. Discussion of whether students can actually handle it (e.g., if that is the only course students are taking they could handle it very well. However, the question is how they are going to do it. Question of whether a W course be done in a 3 week course with sufficient attention to revision. Since it has been done, should it be at the discretion of the Deans? Question of whether WACC should draft guidelines? DJ requested that we should draft guidelines for deans to use effective Winter 2010. DJ says she will support us in expediting this. S. Ellis has agreed to start drafting this document.
Next, we look at W Course proposals:
THR 100, Wolff-Wilkinson: approved 6, none opposed.
[General question emerges of how much first draft of essay then rewrite counts up to. So, if they only have 10 pages of writing required, then all is revised, that can equal 20 pages, even though the student is most certainly not rewriting all pages.]
PHI 302, K. Gorniak- Kocikowska: approved 8 (2 email votes), none opposed
PHI 301, K. Gorniak- Kocikowska: approved 8 (2 email votes), none opposed
ANT 442,V. Andrushko : approved 6, none opposed.
JRN 200, J. Kovner: approved 6, none opposed
No new proposals were received.
Meeting adjourned at 10:50.
Respectfully Submitted by S. Corbett
