Writing-Across-the-Curriculum Committee (WACC)

MINUTES
October 30, 2008
9:35am to 11:00 am
ASC 311

Present:  T. Ferrucci (ex-officio), K. Lacey, K. Marsland, N. Marano, V. Breslin, M. Purdy, D. Smith


1. Meeting called to order at 9:50 a.m.

2. Minutes of October 16th approved by email

3. Updates from K. Marsland/General Discussion

a. Website continues to be updated by D. Carroll
b. Spring 2009 Schedule - expect over 100 W courses to be available
Some exigencies given - these decisions are made by WACC Chair. Discussion and decision that any exigencies that are made will be discussed at the following WACC meeting for confirmation and inclusion in minutes.
c. Workshop Schedule - D. Carroll continues with workshops, next one Nov 5th - although attendance is less than hoped for they will continue. Committee noted that time slots (community hour) are problematic as many faculty are not free during that time.
d. Director Position 2009-2010 - search has not been started
e. Chair-elect needed as soon as possible - members considering
f. Kate to meet with Rachel Vaters-Carr, UCF Chair of Ad hoc Rules and Bylaws Committee to discuss concerns voiced by members of UCF and WACC bylaws
g. Proposal timeline concerns have been raised by chairs and deans

4. Review of Proposals

Course: ENG 301 Introduction to Literary Analysis and Critical Theory
Faculty: K. Hughes
Committee Recommendation: Approve with clarification
Committee Vote: 7-0 with S. Ellis recusing

Course: ENG 200 Ethnography in Digital Age
Faculty: A. Beaudin
Committee Recommendation: Revise and resubmit by Monday 11/3/08
Committee Vote: 7-0 with S. Ellis recusing

Update: Revised proposal was submitted and approved via email on 11/4/08 by an electronic vote of 6-0, with S. Ellis recusing.

 

 

5. New Proposals Distributed

REC 120 - Panza
THR 382 - Elmwood
EDU 414 - Achhpal

6. Independent and Internship Study W-Proposals - process discussed. At present independent study W proposal goes to the WACC for approval first then to Dean. For internship the approval is made by the Dean. Suggested revision is to have both types of proposals be submitted to the WACC Director for approval of the W-portion. The independent study would be forwarded to Dean for approval and the internship would stop at the WACC Director. Committee agree that it is also necessary to add  a requirement to the proposals that the student explain how writing in the independent study or internship will meet the W component. Forms need updates with option for W credit added. It will also be necessary to clarify the grading process so that it is consistent with W requirements.

7. Writing contest - committee to begin looking at criteria for spring writing contest.
