Writing Across the Curriculum Committee

1. Call to Order
a. In attendance: K. Marano, K. Marsland, K. Lacey (chair), T. Ferrucci (ex-officio), S. Ellis (ex-officio), D. Smith, A. Eich-Krohm
b. Evaluations submitted electronically: S. Corbett, K. Burke

2. WACC Chairperson Report by K. Lacey:
a. Exigencies: Minimum of three exigencies have been requested for spring 2011
b. M. Hartog, chair of UCF, raised the issue of electing standing committee chairs in the spring because then new members are unable to become chair in the fall. But the concern is then that standing committees have an oversight problem at the beginning of the fall semester. The proposed solution is that individual committees decide on their chair elections by their bylaws

3. WACC Director Report by S. Ellis:
a. The second writing workshop of the semester had double digit attendance and was very successful, S. Corbett organized it
b. The third workshop has to be moved from December 2nd to December 8th. Topic will be: Proposing W-courses hopefully including how to incorporate LEP courses into the WAC program
c. S. Ellis will meet with administration to show how many W-courses are taught across all schools and departments to make the need for W-courses visible

4. Writing Center Director Report by T. Ferrucci:
a. One of the workshops of the writing center this semester is about online access of articles and takes place in the library
b. Four different types of workshops were offered by the writing center this fall which a total of 99 students attended so far

5. Other Announcements:
a. R. Hedrin asked if librarians could be involved either as ex-officio or members of the WAC committee and S. Ellis will invite her to a WAC committee meeting to discuss this further

Decision: Approved (5-0-1)
g. Yacher: GEO 260 "Population Geography" not enough time to review the proposal
h. Tarbox: ENG 398 "Multimedia Writing" not enough time to review the proposal

a. W-Course Approval Process: continue discussion regarding possible move to approve faculty rather than course by course approval
b. Assessment: continue discussion regarding ongoing assessment of approved proposals
c. Transition of W-Courses to LEP program: continue discussion regarding implications of LEP on WAC Program
