Responsibilities
WHAT ARE THE REPONSIBILITIES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES?
After September 11, 2001, the U.S. government ordered the INS to develop strict regulations for international students. Ignoring these regulations or failing to abide by them, students may lose the opportunity to study in the United States. Therefore, it is crucial that students keep their passport and other documents in order. It is also necessary that they notify the Office of International Student Services of all changes, i.e., deviation from full-time studies, address, and telephone changes. The most important regulations to remember are the following:
- Students must have two documents -- an I-94 form attached to their passport and an
I-20 form showing they are authorized by the INS to attend school in the United States.
- Students may work on campus. They cannot work off campus in the United States during
their first 12 months without special permission, which is given only by the INS and
the International Student Advisor.
- A Social Security number is required for work. The identification number issued to
you by the university is not a Social Security number -- it is used internally for
SCSU business only. Please do not present this university ID number to any outside
agencies or employers; they will not accept it. If you need further information about
obtaining your Social Security number, please contact the International Student Services
office at (203) 392-6821.
- Students must carry a full course load of study during their stay here.
- Students who need to deviate from full-time status must contact the International
Student advisor before dropping a class.
- Students must carry health insurance and comply with university health services requirements of a physical examination and proper immunization records.
